She also included an invitation to be a founder member of the Puffin Club. I think it cost 5 shillings, and I had to get a postal order to send off, but I received my Puffin Posts for years. I still have them! She and I have been a mutual support system. Yes, my children, and husband have been excellent, but her children are all boys. So, we have leaned on one another a little.<br />
So among various emails I slowly got inspired, and on Sunday I sat with a rough ( very rough ) plan to make a bag for her.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSs2UnsePocB-h7lVwt041Zti0202LWDsx_PMCA-1R8szhpDT9kSRgtx_4PP0uY4T0XMMxyvL_P4KY6qrPxd6oaWzpvBKeANA0zGinfuK9FQZP5WUH8HoTfAcD2DFMpGIpTddozEugXA/s1600/DSCN2690.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSs2UnsePocB-h7lVwt041Zti0202LWDsx_PMCA-1R8szhpDT9kSRgtx_4PP0uY4T0XMMxyvL_P4KY6qrPxd6oaWzpvBKeANA0zGinfuK9FQZP5WUH8HoTfAcD2DFMpGIpTddozEugXA/s400/DSCN2690.JPG" width="400" /></a>Very quickly this happened</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I mentioned little ends of spools, which are clearly not big enough to go on the machine? Well, some of them went- on the machine! You see the ends of those petals? They have been played with by my machine, to give an extra dimension</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu8mXp8ZUPEEDi1tg_y98XvtX86ge07VMrWSEdVUJKGrRR_L_X7N9rg23W-wPLdenYwEsqIJxl2gGJK1bAZ25muur7tk7rxpXO3v0KHJFjZjtYx-gyjizrYO9uAA_Ou401u_baqvDLQA/s1600/DSCN2691.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu8mXp8ZUPEEDi1tg_y98XvtX86ge07VMrWSEdVUJKGrRR_L_X7N9rg23W-wPLdenYwEsqIJxl2gGJK1bAZ25muur7tk7rxpXO3v0KHJFjZjtYx-gyjizrYO9uAA_Ou401u_baqvDLQA/s640/DSCN2691.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And this now becomes part of a pocket panel. I couldn't ask about preferred colours, after all, this will be a surprise for her- so, she is getting green!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All had to come from stash, as it was a Sunday, and I wanted to just get on with it. With coronavirus, fabric shops are basically shut, you can buy online , but not go and get the stuff. I was pleasantly surprised that I had enough that co-ordinated well enough to do the whole thing. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A zip pocket put in, I liked the lilac zip- a little quirk? and piping above and below the panel</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
and then that panel incorporated into the front of the bag</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
Don't tell anyone, but I had a tidy up. No it looks worse, because I am halfway through, however,<br />
<br />
I was sorting spools of thread, and I seem to have quite a few 'nearly' spools. These are clearly too little left to go back on the machine, ( though I have done it before...) so how far down do they have to be to just get rid? Or do I keep them indefinitely just in case I want that one for hand sewing?<br />
<br />
When do you get rid?<br />
<br />
I am still expecting to keep all these. Madness still runs in this quarter!mammafairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08970531305586032149noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6250003714263719321.post-16877986336974836392020-05-16T13:05:00.000+01:002020-05-16T13:05:38.455+01:00I made it!For some time I have been aware of the absence of a drop cover to go over my sewing machine. My daughter's machines have them supplied, but my machine came with a carry bag, which is brilliant, but doesn't function as a cover you can just stick on when you stop sewing for the moment.<br />
<br />
I also have a promise to myself, that at some point I will attempt to become reasonably capable of free motion quilting. I have dabbled for years, but truth to tell, you have to practice, like with other skills, in order to be able to actually produce a half way acceptable result.<br />
<br />
With current conditions - coronavirus-I am spending a bit more time at home,so perhaps now is a reasonable time to actually do something about it?<br />
<br />
I had spotted a tutorial on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0sXFuLNkR4" target="_blank">Youtube</a>, which was really easy to follow and did the thinking for me. You may not want the thinking done for you, but when I am feeling brainless, it is lovely to have someone tell me what to do. Just some of the time.<br />
Luckily I found suitable fabric in my stash. Would't it be frustrating if you got that urge and there was nothing you wanted to use that way?<br />
<br />
So I made my template, made the pieces, put on a couple of sensible pockets, and done!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This rich dark red, printed in gold, it was picked up at Abakhan some time ago, as being too useful looking to leave behind, And rich and pretty looking. It never occurred to me at the time, I would use it for me!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The kimonos on thie panel are part of a sheet of kimonos. Again, serendipity, I had not realised these fabrics, bought at different times, would work so beautifully together. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Having attached kimonos to red, I sandwiched with plain white on the back, and cut side panels without the kimonos, and got to the scary bit. FMQ. </div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This one was the starter. And boy, does it show. I had no clear idea what I was going to end up with, or where I was going with it. I knew that I would get a smoother result by going a bit more quickly, but how quickly is a bit more ? And you can see my strange meander is just that, strange. But this is warts and all, and everyone has some things that aren't quite, well, quite. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Having done this I felt a bit more as if I might get somewhere- No way am I ripping it out, no matter how awful, and starting again, so this will be there to remind me how I can get something randomly dreadful, move on!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-gdWaoBsmX-wx9um3F2EFA5cARa4h0YKbKqIvVSnRgd-wiE8ZNv2zsgATw_P4FhNJt0zmaN0uJ5q9-MVsqp0CprCcgiL46xgG6Ux51WxnxFg4udEuKdxN3frkSr2PfQinhz437oMWIg/s1600/DSCN2676.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-gdWaoBsmX-wx9um3F2EFA5cARa4h0YKbKqIvVSnRgd-wiE8ZNv2zsgATw_P4FhNJt0zmaN0uJ5q9-MVsqp0CprCcgiL46xgG6Ux51WxnxFg4udEuKdxN3frkSr2PfQinhz437oMWIg/s640/DSCN2676.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So then I did side two. I know it is not perfect, but I am a LOT happier with this one. The pattern emerging reminds me of tree bark. It is organic and flows . Yes there are plenty of hiccups, and I realise I need to stop the machine only when I want to change a direction radically, as I will get a jerk whenever I do stop. I think it will not be obvious to the uninitiated that there are loads of jumpy jerks there. I know, you know, but except for the quilt police, no-one else will know. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I wasn't going to do my tree bark over my kimonos, so I just did the lines between the little panels, to keep everything together and left it at that. Tree bark on the rest. </div>

What would I do differently?<br />
I would make the binding for the attachment of the side panels to the main a little wider. Instead of 2" strips, I would try 2.5". This would let me cover the layers at the bottom corners more readily.<br />
I would also make the whole thing about 1" shorter, It is a tad too long. It is not an issue worth taking apart for, but it is unnecessarily tall.<br />
<br />
The details for those who like them<br />
Outer fabrics from Abakhan, white lining from Black Sheep, wadding from festival of quilts 2 years ago. It is iron on double sided wadding, which I love. No it does not iron on firmly at all, but just enough to keep it stable, but you can peel it off quite easily. And yes BOTH sides are 'iron-on-able'<br />
Which is now a word. Official. Yes.<br />
Thread used was all Gutermann, apart from the overlocker. The quilting was done with Sulky 02776, weight 30.<br />
<br />
<br />
I am reasonably happy, but I now need another FMQ project to keep up the practice.<br />
Any ideas?<br />

I have been absent for some time. Most folks know that we have had trying times and sewing has been very low on the priorities. Sadly.<br />
<br />
More sadly, my responsibilities have reduced and I am finally able to start sewing, and to enjoy the sewing. Only a few little fairly straightforward projects, but it is a start.<br />
<br />
Last summer my DD2 and I painted our garden bench, a pretty shade of blue. And the next thing was, it needed a seat cushion. Luckily- or not so luckily, the weather took a turn for the worse, and sitting out became a non starter. This year, as good weather began, I finally made the cushion!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The fabric is one I was given, as 'spare', by a friend. It was bought in IKEA many years ago, and there is a shade of blue in it which matches the bench beautifully. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I may say there has been more bench sitting this year than I can ever recall. Yay! for seat cushions. The weather helps, of course! Though on Thursday I was up sewing and heard the rain begin! We had one of those drenching downpours, which caused me to race down the stairs and out to retrieve the cushion, in bare feet! No harm done, and the comfort is excellent. Thanks Jan!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Some years ago, I made a bag for work. This bag has had daily treks to and from work, trips overseas and has generally been ubiquitous,. Everywhere I went, so did my orange bag. In the fullness of time, the strap started to wear, and the wear got worse, and really the bag needed to retire. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For that to happen I needed a new bag. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tadaaa!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I will say I was very happy with my pattern matching on the front, that flap really does have a good match on the elephants. </div>

and on the back I quilted round the elephants.<br />

I had also promised my DD2 another simple coin purse. It is one of those things that you promise and then it doesn't quite happen... Finally it has.<br />

Simple, easy to follow instruction, though the instruction wanted me to hand sew the lining in place.<br />
<br />
Well, you know me and hand sewing...<br />
<br />
Of course it can be done on the machine.<br />
<br />
The first one I tried to make it by sandwiching the zip between the lining and the outer. It got complicated and fiddly, yes, it worked but I still ended up with a little hand sewing, but it was OK. That was the pretty turquoisey one with the yellow zip.<br />
<br />
I had to have another go, though. So the dark red one also had to happen. This time I did make the lining up separately, but I topstitched the lining into place with the machine. No hand sewing at all- or anyway, just hiding my ends.<br />
<br />

Life has rather got in the way, but recently I have succeeded in spending a wee bit of time making a gift for a friend. I have loads of projects in my head, but getting them out of the head and into reality?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEx-VL8EELtSUoCTwQfPCBIhnVoYV5zAKZXseysMebfPqI-a1v3uE8wOGYwjrAjs37U6sS9JZI1CP1DWnDyrERiWZWk20rXJX2eNq_BvrpekhYku8NZVQ8gvtJUVW2hWuJrAGnLT3l1A/s1600/DSCN2552.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEx-VL8EELtSUoCTwQfPCBIhnVoYV5zAKZXseysMebfPqI-a1v3uE8wOGYwjrAjs37U6sS9JZI1CP1DWnDyrERiWZWk20rXJX2eNq_BvrpekhYku8NZVQ8gvtJUVW2hWuJrAGnLT3l1A/s640/DSCN2552.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We were invited to a friends house for a meal. They had recently had an extension put on, and had decorated mainly in grey, with just wee splashes of deep red. As they are also mad enough to house four rescue cats, this felt an appropriate gift?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I am remiss, I have not been keeping up, but then not a lot of sewing has been happening...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxQKo1rSvHXxMrWgS1NOqH0qNK80PYHFMLeSbiaG0BBovglDegtYktgYXI2arJhcBuY4P8VEdiVJgv5XiUlfV3-_DlSGdGksc10ayHcPmzF0AAcEQaiCEBLajznA9xEjZxd-k1YMIVsA/s1600/DSCN2411.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxQKo1rSvHXxMrWgS1NOqH0qNK80PYHFMLeSbiaG0BBovglDegtYktgYXI2arJhcBuY4P8VEdiVJgv5XiUlfV3-_DlSGdGksc10ayHcPmzF0AAcEQaiCEBLajznA9xEjZxd-k1YMIVsA/s640/DSCN2411.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This is mainly because other duties are superseding the sewing room,, including more and more hoops to jump through for work. It is not work itself that is the hassle, but the extra bits, which one must do to keep working and for which one does not get paid....<br />
<br />
However, that little oven glove appeared and was given to someone who, strange though it may sound, loves dachshunds. And blue.<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
I have also done one or two other small items, but they somehow forgot to get themselves a photoshoot. I expect I had other stuff to get on with...<br />
<br />
And we did squeeze in a holiday, where we managed to hit, accidentally, on the Spanish version of Sewing Bee!<br />
Completely different, and oh so much more challenge... I loved it. Even though I speak no Spanish! Try it, when you can find the time- Maestros de la Costura... It takes a completely different tack...<br />

New responsibilities - no, you do not want to know- leave me a lack of both time and energy, so here is the quickie version<br />

This wallet is from the Zakka style book- <a href="https://ohsewcultured.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">My lovely K</a>, my son's fiancee requested it be made a little larger than the pattern, as she wanted to get an A5 notebook into it.<br />
Why is it not quite so simple as one expects to upsize a simple design like this?<br />
Anyway, here it is, The slightly larger version!<br />

It was also not simple to get the right zip for it. You need a zip a couple of inches longer than the measurement round half the wallet. I could get plenty of choice <i>just too small </i>but the right length. That was awkward. Not helped by not wishing to drive 12 miles to maybe be able to find it. And not wishing to wait for it by post.<br />
<br />
never mind- the job got done.<br />
<br />
And then, a quick round up from the house at Christmas. DD2 and I went on a wreath course in 2017, so for 2018 we wanted to make our own. We managed to blag spruce offcuts- a bootfull - for free from the local Christmas Tree farm, and we had the rings from a well known source, bought our wire and went for it<br />

And our festive table. Seven of us sat down for Goose.mammafairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08970531305586032149noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6250003714263719321.post-37241284401587950112018-09-12T16:17:00.000+01:002018-09-12T16:17:04.776+01:00Harvest, cooking more than sewing!It is autumn again, and the damsons have been long disposed of- into damson pickles... I made some in 2014, and then, as you do, I forgot about them. Then, this summer I came across them, when I had friends staying for the weekend.<br />
With four years to mature, oh, wow! but they were <i>good. </i><br />
So, almost all my damsons that had not been made into jam, went into pickle... If you never made damson pickles, and you have a glut of damsons...<br />
<br />
Wash and prick your damsons. A kilo or so... believe me, you cannot have too many pickled damsons!<br />
<br />
prepare some sweet spiced vinegar, Why does cider vinegar come in such small bottles?<br />
<br />
Ok, 2 bottles of cider vinegar. Do not be over fussy, you could use wine vinegar, and if all else fails use distilled malt vinegar. These go into your saucepan.<br />
<br />
Add around a pound and a half of sugar. Yes, I used common or garden white, but I think brown would add a depth of flavour.<br />
Add some spices.<br />
Maybe, cinnamon , cardamom, star anise,allspice, what is in your cupboard that you love?<br />
<br />
and the zest and juice of an orange or a lemon.<br />
<br />
Bring that lot to the boil. You can be pricking those damsons while you are bringing that up to boil. Boil it for 5 minutes or so. , and allow to cool a little.<br />
Add the damsons now, and bring back to the boil.<br />
<br />
Let them simmer gently for a little to ensure they are tender, and then pack the damsons into sterilised jars, use a slotted spoon, to drain most of the vinegar off.<br />
Now bring that vinegar back to the boil, and boil quite hard to reduce the liquid.<br />
Pour this over your damsons and seal those jars.<br />
<br />
Hide them for about 4 years and then they will be glorious!<br />
<br />
No, seriously, let them mature for about a month, or two,.<br />
<br />
I was told they are good with cheese and cold meats. They are also gorgeous with two or three dropped into greek yogurt, with a drizzle of that vinegar liquor.... ahhhh. Good stuff!<br />
<br />
So this year my little pear tree also decided to produce a crop! I got two whole kilos of pears!<br />
<br />
So I have also made pear pickles. An adaptation of <a href="https://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/type-of-dish/preserves/spiced-pickled-pears" target="_blank">Delia's recipe...</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7nAjFdgR7mSl5uiYjmihxEUlP1hQFP5KcMT6RtCkXclwmwtkVG8J7WWo-iyWQGyibToljRtb75zPDwrVwDiY0l2RfjkiBqqtj44M8czLG4IirguPg9vdbeYpno6HLZQT3Nz4MpbADfA/s1600/DSCN2337.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7nAjFdgR7mSl5uiYjmihxEUlP1hQFP5KcMT6RtCkXclwmwtkVG8J7WWo-iyWQGyibToljRtb75zPDwrVwDiY0l2RfjkiBqqtj44M8czLG4IirguPg9vdbeYpno6HLZQT3Nz4MpbADfA/s400/DSCN2337.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
11 little jars of pear pickles...<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK5_DOdBWy5DOTyx38nG3XSzWjqBAs1gtsvS1HqMh-Aw-WLuZeWmnQcLtlwkUEcilPGdeesRi-NzMQ9OwndJLvoCLHsfgA3LU3XTHvR4bwTQJdFLcawHXRvAMVSDXczK6B0UDhHiT8rA/s1600/DSCN2338.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK5_DOdBWy5DOTyx38nG3XSzWjqBAs1gtsvS1HqMh-Aw-WLuZeWmnQcLtlwkUEcilPGdeesRi-NzMQ9OwndJLvoCLHsfgA3LU3XTHvR4bwTQJdFLcawHXRvAMVSDXczK6B0UDhHiT8rA/s400/DSCN2338.JPG" width="300" /></a><br />
And there is the left over sweet spiced vinegar, which I cannot bring myself to throw away...<br />
<br />
I have come to the conclusion that with just two of us at home now, all children having left the nest, small jars are the way to do it. They are big enough for a good taster, but not so big that the stuff goes off before being eaten once opened.<br />
Also a perfect size for mini gifts!mammafairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08970531305586032149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6250003714263719321.post-27849872305936091712018-09-09T15:45:00.000+01:002018-09-09T15:45:37.337+01:00belated- yes I went to FoQ this year... <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I saw many, many quilts. Lots of talent, lots of imagination, almost nothing I felt I wanted to take an image of. But this one, I liked the flow, and the feel of it.<br />
<br />
I attended a lecture by Ricky Timms. I was not sure what to expect from it, but he was excellent- a good and entertaining speaker, with some intriguing ideas to bring into play sometime... If you get the chance-go!<br />
<br />
I took a class while I was there. Jenny Raiment was doing a twiddle workshop. It was only an hour, but you came away with a 'good start' on a patch suitable for a small cushion cover.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I came home and finished it. Quilted it some, and did a back. I also bought the bits fro a second one while there. Jenny had cut too many, and sold three spares to us, for a very reasonable fee- thanks Jenny. So I got one, and made up the front of that. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My DD2 came for the weekend, and promptly adopted the first, so I finished the second and it also went off to hers. She has a couple of cushions, supplied with her furnished flatwhich she was not loving the covers of, so these have brightened her life a wee bit. </div>

The quilting on the back was just me, playing and taking whichever turn I fancied. She likes it, so that is good. I used a variegated thread, which just lifts the whole thing withouit screaming at you.<br />
I need a LOT more practice with piping, but DD2 will excuse my inadequacy there!<br />
<br />
Following from that, I started a belated gift, for a friend.<br />
I used Jenny's technique for the corners, and appliqued a heart in the centre.<br />

First, may I apologise to anyone who has commented and got no response. Blogger, in their infinite wisdom, have stopped forwarding comments to my email, so I do not always register they are here! I should be able to catch them eventually, unless someone comments on a fairly old post- I do love to know you have been here, and enjoyed ( or hated, even- I do not always love what I have done) some of my projects..<br />
<br />
Now to the point of the post!<br />
<br />
Some things take their own time. I think the Brazilian Post office comes in to that category.<br />
<br />
Last year we did a swap. It was a Winter/Christmas swap. I drew they loveliest of ladies for whom to make. Sil, who lives in Brazil. The last day for posting was on November, but I knew I had lots of making to get on with, so I got my parcel off early. So my package went in the post towards the start of November.<br />
<br />
I had pretty sparkly frosty looking fabric to give the 'chill factor'. and with some blue and crisp white on white, I thought a little scene would appear- Birdies in the snow, a few left over leaves, and we are set.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I know Sil loves all things Christmas, so I popped in a home made ornament, for her, reckoning 6 weeks in the post? Max, she will have this for her tree... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And I sat back to wait..... and wait.... and wait!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Eventually I contacted the swap mamas. What should I do? Should I start again, now months later, and send another one? Or should I leave her in the lurch- no swappy quilt on her doorstep? Either option feels unfair, but what could I do? Post office here cannot trace it past our borders, Brazilian post is notorious... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Mamas said leave it. So, reluctantly I left it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then, this week, a whole 9 months later, News!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The package has arrived! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/silort/43821609651/in/pool-2579606@N23" target="_blank">Sil's beaming face </a>is all that I could have hoped for, she is such a joy to give to, as she shows all her delight in the offerings . </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, that is now home, and I think, after 9 months we should call it a baby!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
This is the beautiful grey lace laid out on my bedroom floor being cut. As the fabric is one directional- though would anyone have noticed if I had cut panels upside down? Possibly not, but I would have known- I had to cut each piece on it's own. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Why my bedroom? Because it has a large floor area, and is carpeted. If I am crawling all over the floor to cut, please have some sympathy for my knees!</div>

<span style="color: black;"><br /></span><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: black;">The dress has an under layer of pale antiqued pink satin. again has to be cut all in one direction- how come I did not know that before? I have made stuff up in satin previously, and cursed it as it snags and pulls, but this heavy satin from <a href="https://www.watsonandthornton.co.uk/" target="_blank">Watson and Thornton</a> in Shrewsbury was a dream. Is sewed nicely, hung beautifully and was just amazing. The gentleman there was really helpful too. Great stock, and knew what to tell us. I recommend it!</span></div>
<span style="color: black;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The pattern was a vintage <a href="https://jaycotts.co.uk/products/v2903#.W1hHv9JKiUk" target="_blank">Vogue 2903</a> and in common with a lot of Vogue patterns was slightly unusual in construction. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The dress is a princess seamed dress. All very straightforward there, yes, but, there is a yoke under the neckline, and the sleeve is hung from the yoke, and the side panels, without being stitched to the centre panels. So the centre panels are effectively sleeveless, and float free, - and hang beautifully I may say- so the original instruction tells me to construct the dress and form the sleeveless bit before putting on the yoke. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Having made a toile I decided it would be simpler to make the centre panels and do the shoulder straps before adding the side panels. And it was. Much easier, and gave me a better finish. The other bit I changed, was the facing construction. In the original pattern the front and back facings are each in two pieces, which are then stitched together at center front and back. I looked at it carefully, in case there was a non straight of grain seam there, but it looked to be straight, so, I cut these on the flod instead. This reduced the bulk at the centre necklines, which helped a lot. </div>

The sleeves have a slightly unequal underarm length, which is gathered to fit on the long side. The end result looks lovely, though I had not met this before. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As the dress is very heavy I added ribbon loops from the underarms to help hang it up. It also has very wide neckline, and without these the dress wuold have fallen off the hanger in no time. </div>

We then made a 50's style net petticoat to go underneath.<br />
<br />
She reported back from the wedding- so many compliments, she was thrilled with the result, and especially that the dress was unique!<br />
<br />
So, the other dress?<br />
Was the littlest bridesmaid's dress.<br />
<br />
It started over coffee and cake.<br />
The bride could not find the right dress for her youngest bridesmaid. She wanted her to be a 'mini-me'. I am familiar with this, as my daughter requested her youngest bridesmaid be a 'mini me'. In this instance though, the brides dress was quite sophisticated, off the shoulder, and not what you really want a 9 year old in. However, covered buttons, yes we can do that, collar detail, yes, and can we tie it in with the adult bridesmaids, who are in a pastel rainbow of colours...<br />
<br />
I made a few suggestions, and it was decided the dress should be made.<br />
<br />
They found an ivory crepe which matched the bride's dress perfectly, told me what was wanted, gave me measurements, and left me to it!<br />
I found a bodice in one place, invented the skirt, sorted the collar, which was to mirror the brides dress detail, and I was given ribbon to use.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXDAIGX2GW4KMO8R_00wktYXKG4ZtKwBq0XPMlmLE9VV-n-crN6rmt6AdUMUDgZKYUgSMx8Zy0P-BHITj9nstVIWfgxBgRnzRo8UiLkpZQ1tXDS1O6GI4-DYsXDe6mFOp9javPwbdhaA/s1600/DSCN2286.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXDAIGX2GW4KMO8R_00wktYXKG4ZtKwBq0XPMlmLE9VV-n-crN6rmt6AdUMUDgZKYUgSMx8Zy0P-BHITj9nstVIWfgxBgRnzRo8UiLkpZQ1tXDS1O6GI4-DYsXDe6mFOp9javPwbdhaA/s640/DSCN2286.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
The ribbons on the waistband are the same colours as each of the bigger lasses, the collar mimics the bride's dress.<br />

and there are little hooks on the back of the bow, with hand whipped eyes on the dress, so they are all but invisible, to support the bow, or it will drop funny.<br />
<br />
<br />
The bow is invented, and sewn together, so it did not need to be tied, and the ribbon tails left to flow free. I have seen the photos and she looks beautiful!<br />
<br />
The skirt is part circular, and sadly the crepe stretched unevenly, despite being left to hang for a bit, It ended up nearly straight... Ah well, you cannot win all the time!<br />
<br />
Tip for a bow like this- The sash is 3" wide, but a 3" bow looked wrong. So I made the bow 5" wide. Much better! I graded the ribbon out to the edges to look right.mammafairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08970531305586032149noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6250003714263719321.post-14154331439968415992018-05-06T08:19:00.001+01:002018-05-06T08:19:19.890+01:00and done!That quilt is now bound, and is ready to land in it's intended destination. I am very happy with how the binding went on.<br />
Any quilt police looking? no? well, I overlocked all round the edge before putting the binding on.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMqba786jeIP5NYp07B18ZdQIHXg0DG0_JwXEUB0aNYGAXwlhdq88RbafpYgRJ7ksznWW8hCTIhMQcBSx3Dv_g2F22wmraX-MBocG7OE0KncBmrontXnzJZq9vcK_MBpWbaCzp3IYJvg/s1600/DSCN2188.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMqba786jeIP5NYp07B18ZdQIHXg0DG0_JwXEUB0aNYGAXwlhdq88RbafpYgRJ7ksznWW8hCTIhMQcBSx3Dv_g2F22wmraX-MBocG7OE0KncBmrontXnzJZq9vcK_MBpWbaCzp3IYJvg/s640/DSCN2188.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As the overlocker's 'bite' is just on 1/4" it gives me a neat finish, to which I can then apply the binding, and as long as my seam allowance is just a tiny tad bigger, the overlocking is hidden, and I have a neat secure edge to work with. </div>

I have wanted to have that skill, so I could FMQ and feel, well, happy with the end result. But it takes practice. And I do not want to have to practise.<br />
<br />
However, I had a little project just for me. So I am not inflicting my substandard work on another unsuspecting body. So, is this not the perfect time to get on with it?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkqUhAVjVlpjHDknBpo6DRJyDb5V8DhMU0N0W_nDRVd6Qg_YonnLwP3WW25Lx6NPAdXhgh0WqIjeQWGJad3EZj5uxUdtcjhUTp9r-hwJFq_hlFjFryAk0fh9wLOaoRmY7uuu48ifEiVQ/s1600/DSCN2184.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkqUhAVjVlpjHDknBpo6DRJyDb5V8DhMU0N0W_nDRVd6Qg_YonnLwP3WW25Lx6NPAdXhgh0WqIjeQWGJad3EZj5uxUdtcjhUTp9r-hwJFq_hlFjFryAk0fh9wLOaoRmY7uuu48ifEiVQ/s640/DSCN2184.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I am going to pop this little fellow in my car- that emergency blanket you are meant to carry? Yes, this will be the one. So, as it is for me, I could carry out the plan, to FMQ.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW_ozLwm0KQrXdAtBuHdom6GELVFh0-Q7Rnn4pCozmYgqZs4X8xloxgfkqqMq_oRUV4naGiZf0qJBsB9OgCCwrNbcMAXa2SUkyZml279c0K1lcALUCDWHOyddD49qYA678IWurVXoseA/s1600/DSCN2185.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW_ozLwm0KQrXdAtBuHdom6GELVFh0-Q7Rnn4pCozmYgqZs4X8xloxgfkqqMq_oRUV4naGiZf0qJBsB9OgCCwrNbcMAXa2SUkyZml279c0K1lcALUCDWHOyddD49qYA678IWurVXoseA/s640/DSCN2185.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started by doing one line of an old pattern that I like, seemed suitable, and that is adaptable. This first one is not FMQ. It is done using the walking foot and a blend of manipulation, organic line, and stop start while moving stuff around. I have used this leaf and vine pattern a few times, I lay no claim to it, but I always just did it off my own bat, without thinking too hard. That is the left hand vine on the photo above. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then, I put on my quilting foot, put my feed dogs down, and went for it with the FMQ version. The first try is that vine on the right in the photo above. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi96bGcWfZGZUksBtXLdaayO2_jLtgSClHthPFHDHGCWZiOfyiYf0WWJI81i3GRMW0v6UJ9lAhx02yyZowO7XE2adtRLocfEGC6mImQHDMO4VojuvGpcmmySQLbpKpQl7KiLES6rZDkuA/s1600/DSCN2186.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi96bGcWfZGZUksBtXLdaayO2_jLtgSClHthPFHDHGCWZiOfyiYf0WWJI81i3GRMW0v6UJ9lAhx02yyZowO7XE2adtRLocfEGC6mImQHDMO4VojuvGpcmmySQLbpKpQl7KiLES6rZDkuA/s400/DSCN2186.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
And then I did more lots. Some are better in some places than others are in other places. That is what practice is all about, though, isn't it?<br />
Yes, I can pick fault all the way down the line, and there are some bits which would benefit from pulling out and restarting, but, the whole effect seems to me to be acceptable, if not perfect anywhere. I finally feel I have started to FMQ in a very rreal way. I have ended with an item I can be not too ashamed of!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiucl1dPZErNe4Q7vE2vrmB78SWP7mLV9J5_-C0KAUtMlIhG8Irhl66vVUv0V0wPbzguAn6Wt4GBMH8wiVV8qCcfPelOjwD_2riOPeSXV9HfpSvyJPVR2fWzLLEnjNr9in8Op2wW1kngw/s1600/DSCN2187.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiucl1dPZErNe4Q7vE2vrmB78SWP7mLV9J5_-C0KAUtMlIhG8Irhl66vVUv0V0wPbzguAn6Wt4GBMH8wiVV8qCcfPelOjwD_2riOPeSXV9HfpSvyJPVR2fWzLLEnjNr9in8Op2wW1kngw/s640/DSCN2187.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, don't you be pulling too many holes in my work, I have very tender feelings just now!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What have I learnt? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Reduce the pressure on the presser foot, even though you do not see that it should be needed as the quilting foot doesn't really hold the quilt down- It still helps!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Perhaps a broader sweep of pattern would be an easier start. I should have worked up to those fiddly leaves a bit more.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Be content with 'acceptable' do not insist on 'perfect' . </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the lines across the bottom, which were done after the leaf pattern, I FMQed those too. There I found a better result with 'pedal to the metal' but trying to keep my 'feed' fairly slow and even going through. Still not perfect, but it will do!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I still need to bind it, but shall have to go and buy the fabric for the binding, I just do not quite have enough to do without. Ho hum. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Any thoughts, folks? How did you get on with FMQ? Have you tried it? Are you still too wary? </div>

Ok, I bought fabric. I needed a particular type of design for that <a href="http://mammafairysews.blogspot.co.uk/2018/03/last-swap.html" target="_blank">birdie swap</a>.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_dVhE6mvWDuEZdbh5OW2fG2rFyibxldBm0aaf4kkHh_y48PIfXZXe_qkZYarWYsmDgQoFLE9kFlsZvImUYdzt46mhdnlyMft5m6TW66JcYzhkd8IeNfL2HOEMFfJgowjsH8sT1lxvBQ/s1600/DSCN2129.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_dVhE6mvWDuEZdbh5OW2fG2rFyibxldBm0aaf4kkHh_y48PIfXZXe_qkZYarWYsmDgQoFLE9kFlsZvImUYdzt46mhdnlyMft5m6TW66JcYzhkd8IeNfL2HOEMFfJgowjsH8sT1lxvBQ/s400/DSCN2129.JPG" width="400" /></a>But, yes, but. I loved the colours, and the design, so I got rather more of it than I strictly needed. Apart from the fact that they were not exactly going to sell me just three or four motifs, now were they?<br />
<br />
<br />
And I got some coordinating fabrics too.<br />
<br />
And I had an idea for a quilt top using these with some solid alongside.<br />
<br />
And then I got to planning.<br />
<br />
<br />
So, the next thing is to look at how the motif will fit in the item, and to measure the repeat.<br />
<br />
This is where it all starts to go pear shaped.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZqIt1PqOSLMyzeOxj1uhBxX_IPAJBB2OLgGLxcKnysUo6b3m5V_wF3zroMr-vZXd9lXmtaX5GxeuVXHRZHu_MTeS-w1XZiGeLENa-uaxkxZExWo8-tcgHuDPPnqtQ_DA2v9m1eGI0aQ/s1600/DSCN2165.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZqIt1PqOSLMyzeOxj1uhBxX_IPAJBB2OLgGLxcKnysUo6b3m5V_wF3zroMr-vZXd9lXmtaX5GxeuVXHRZHu_MTeS-w1XZiGeLENa-uaxkxZExWo8-tcgHuDPPnqtQ_DA2v9m1eGI0aQ/s640/DSCN2165.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
( Interesting reflection from the window there almost looks like a pattern piece... )<br />
<br />
The horizontal pattern repeat is 6". In other words, Quilt-Speak as it were, 5 1/2" finish, maximum. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP_RQyvJPUVsnuneR-ZSuhf0ilrL969_9rICLPMpmf74J6rkQWWSN6xCnxyBkgQc__0b1v5jALf91K5aTH1Cm_HYiASJ5DqfWNMmBqfxBgSGssgkt-7f3mbGgoQVyjew1dXg8yi6qW0A/s1600/DSCN2164.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP_RQyvJPUVsnuneR-ZSuhf0ilrL969_9rICLPMpmf74J6rkQWWSN6xCnxyBkgQc__0b1v5jALf91K5aTH1Cm_HYiASJ5DqfWNMmBqfxBgSGssgkt-7f3mbGgoQVyjew1dXg8yi6qW0A/s640/DSCN2164.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Then the vertical repeat is 3 7/8", so that puts us into 3 3/8" finished, maximum.<br />
What on earth can I do with those figures?<br />
<br />
Apart from that, either the pattern is not quite printed straight, or the fabric had warped, so it is not quite cut straight. There will be some waste.<br />
<br />
So, watch this space, I am working on it! I have some ideas, but.....<br />
<br />
Any suggestions out there? Please?<br />
<br />

So I decided to make another wallet, for a daughter. I was not at all sure if she would go for it, but an hour or so after receiving it she was quietly transferring stuff into it, so I guess she was quietly pleased!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

You may notice, this is the same fabric as the bag she was given at Christmas. I think that bag was a tad small, so is not seeing a lot of use. I hope this will be more useful.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSS00GJZJlZ2tmMYTxHAUUvcbrMmoN1VID1tYy4Qn2mHnHrbDZpYLJ6fPCB7FaASMANg9bpoMAIn4UeQkMxGgOoQqZyfw7zxgWcavk4ptdpA2uziyeZqDsJIPgawTtbmZqjPxRGoNJAA/s1600/DSCN2153.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSS00GJZJlZ2tmMYTxHAUUvcbrMmoN1VID1tYy4Qn2mHnHrbDZpYLJ6fPCB7FaASMANg9bpoMAIn4UeQkMxGgOoQqZyfw7zxgWcavk4ptdpA2uziyeZqDsJIPgawTtbmZqjPxRGoNJAA/s400/DSCN2153.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This comes from the Zakka style book, but this time I took fewer liberties with the pattern.<br />
<br />
Yes, I did sew the binding onto the outer before I sewed on the zip, which definitely made life easier.<br />
<br />
Another time? I would insert the zip pocket before cutting the outer to size, as it was just a scrap tight, so came out overall a little smaller than it would have done.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I love that the whole thing opens out flat,<br />
<br />

My birdie pouch came through just as I posted off mine to my partner. so, here is what I was gifted with,<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwS7PNOEXAwcSKkWcs6IMJrWoDNm5rmmXGKybu6CKeC7ZfwXZjK_yAcuO_Nevv4iJsB5DMX1mTuaU_YbtcctCPbSzwCWHgNYgT6al5gY5fPdWWfTY_t0PWR4jvC9pQH3sA0VjanvltQg/s1600/DSCN2148.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwS7PNOEXAwcSKkWcs6IMJrWoDNm5rmmXGKybu6CKeC7ZfwXZjK_yAcuO_Nevv4iJsB5DMX1mTuaU_YbtcctCPbSzwCWHgNYgT6al5gY5fPdWWfTY_t0PWR4jvC9pQH3sA0VjanvltQg/s640/DSCN2148.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Would you believe, my brave partner had never installed a zip before. Well, I can tell you, I would never have known. She did a perfect job. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And look at my goosey heads! aren't they just lovely! I love the bright colours and the 'attitude' they emanate! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And then there were extras. Wee notelets, flannel printed with birds, and some plushies. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I think I did very nicely thank you!<br />
<br />
And the twist? I sent to her and she sent to me! fair exchange, eh?mammafairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08970531305586032149noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6250003714263719321.post-20313221087001457442018-03-07T11:33:00.000+00:002018-03-07T11:33:24.935+00:00last swapI joined a group a wee while back, and have had a few swaps with them. Sadly the numbers swapping have diminished, so now the swaps are done. Not enough folk happy to make and post off to who knows where for the joy of an exchanged swap. So, my final offering for this group was<br />
'Put a Bird on it... and in it!'<br />

I found amazing glorious rich fabric with a bird, just perfect for putting a porthole into, and showcasing the little chap<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfjgI-R21Qs36O5oUUwzztdWnrIvc-BnhRlErEU-4HpEexOiGvmtf05wU6sfYG8F0anvKo1uHDcfN610t_LLi0gQHsIpZwyuCCiZh8jAzKkEpORd0t_UFkQrzWJT8Sm89LYTxPdM0XMA/s1600/DSCN2126.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfjgI-R21Qs36O5oUUwzztdWnrIvc-BnhRlErEU-4HpEexOiGvmtf05wU6sfYG8F0anvKo1uHDcfN610t_LLi0gQHsIpZwyuCCiZh8jAzKkEpORd0t_UFkQrzWJT8Sm89LYTxPdM0XMA/s400/DSCN2126.JPG" width="400" /></a>I love a sneak peek, so I out up this picture and my partner quickly responded, so I was certain she liked where I was going. The blue linen I had had for another task, so it was a simple choice to make, and I had a pretty variegated thread which pulled up the colours in the bird fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I saw a tutorial on youtube, which showed how to make a pouch with multiple pockets. I vaguely followed that, but made my own dimensions, so this ends up with two large pockets, one small zipped pocket and two slips between the small zip pocket and the larger pockets. All fastened with one large zip across the top.<br />
<br />
<br />
To put a bird in it I looked at owl pincushions here there and everywhere... I looked at how they were constructed and then off I went and redesigned the dimensions to make my own version- thank you everyone out there who has published their own versions!<br />
<br />
Basically, you draw an isosceles triangle, then a shorter fatter one. Cut from chosen fabric. Match the bottom edges, and sew one to t'other, and then sew the other side, wrong sides out , also stitching the top part of the larger one. Flatten him out, and trim the point, then turn. Fold down the top point and stitch firmly to the middle of his tummy. Gather stitch round the base.<br />
<br />
Cut out a suitable size cardboard circle- I use the famous cereal packet for this- and cut a circle of fabric for the base about an inch larger in diameter. I then interfaced this circle, and gather stitched the edge, and pulled it in carefully round the card. Press like mad.<br />
<br />
Now stuff your Wol, as fat and firm as you please. I used polyester filling, but walnut shells are probably better- just a major dirth of these in my house- and hand stitch the base to Mr Wol. Plump him up, add suitable eyes, and you are done. He is a really quick make.<br />
<br />
Confession time- I meant his feathers to point down, but cut him wrong... so he has slanty feathers. Sorry <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/funncomfortquilts/" target="_blank">partner</a>.. But she is quirky. She has been named Georgina, by her new human. Most suitable I think!<br />
<br />
<br />

I was rather chuffed with the finish. I think there may be one or two more of these before I am done...<br />

When I was making my pouch I managed to make a boo-boo. I put my bird in facing the wrong direction. hey, it happens. So now, I have a piece that needs using, but is not quite what had been planned.<br />
<br />
A few years ago I got a book- given? bought? not sure. called something like Zakka style.. This wallet was in it. not quite the same size, but I adapt most things, so a variation on the theme of the zakka style wallet appears.<br />
I love how it opens out quite flat. You can see my birds facing away from one another. It works for this though!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaaTyEQPsW8ioNPoVabIT9uDJDm7MQirjl5GmXtqhyphenhyphenLH7ONVABIo_rpWtKLJrP5h3RHn37mh6pbLY4rUP815PsaIycRrbkf_VZlM41KqKLPRChcHMZKBo1Fw_8i8b80xlGP_GXK80j_Q/s1600/DSCN2137.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaaTyEQPsW8ioNPoVabIT9uDJDm7MQirjl5GmXtqhyphenhyphenLH7ONVABIo_rpWtKLJrP5h3RHn37mh6pbLY4rUP815PsaIycRrbkf_VZlM41KqKLPRChcHMZKBo1Fw_8i8b80xlGP_GXK80j_Q/s640/DSCN2137.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Again, I think a few more of these may appear shortly.<br />
<br />

<br />
My partner has received her package, and seems to like it!<br />
<br />
This was a secret partner swap, so nobody knows who is sending to them... Sneaky swap mamas gave us each other! Fantastic sneaky mamas!<br />
<br />
<br />
I will blog about what I received soon! It was rather lovely... don't hold your breath though.. I am busy just now.. Costumes.<br />
<br />mammafairyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08970531305586032149noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6250003714263719321.post-33366224499552882712018-01-24T18:59:00.000+00:002018-01-24T18:59:29.025+00:00So how long does a UFO wait? There are projects. And then, there are PROJECTS.<br />
You get so far and somehow do not make further progress. They stall somewhere between a partial finish and a complete one. So, the first one is a quilt along. From the lovely <a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.co.uk/2008/04/star-quilt-along-week-1.html" target="_blank">Crazymomquilts</a>. Now I know she was doing it in 2008, but I am not certain when DD2 and I decided to have a go. And I have no idea how I came across it.<br />
So here, I proudly present.... Drum roll..... Trumpets.... our Star quilt!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfL9hKESkHlV84AQUyEqyzv3E6f8GOHUo4tDMkwlAI1EiRSXWXYVBhi1HrJjRlgKkgYVea2FfuBYznqvvgMwdp_umfhbqiV6EeXjqqwJCnp3zpqwOWpVTbQUDAJAROEnlCx7k8b10o9Q/s1600/DSCN2112.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfL9hKESkHlV84AQUyEqyzv3E6f8GOHUo4tDMkwlAI1EiRSXWXYVBhi1HrJjRlgKkgYVea2FfuBYznqvvgMwdp_umfhbqiV6EeXjqqwJCnp3zpqwOWpVTbQUDAJAROEnlCx7k8b10o9Q/s640/DSCN2112.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here laid out on the sewing room floor. It has many many faults. Points that are nowhere near pointy, seam allowances that wander to and fro, squares that fail in the first requirement- to be square-ish... But, when I look at it all laid out, I feel good!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl8cKNUajdaA7M6v2Fi2VOPZVcx6Jj8OGh-AutK_Cq1bShKECzmf0Fe9hg-jvu238QQMJvl4w3-iVSafz9TvAFDPPEfrCGy22yKjtVS4JZXrZLp5yWs7aoYHu0Kns18xGaKcgQtDjCfA/s1600/DSCN2115.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl8cKNUajdaA7M6v2Fi2VOPZVcx6Jj8OGh-AutK_Cq1bShKECzmf0Fe9hg-jvu238QQMJvl4w3-iVSafz9TvAFDPPEfrCGy22yKjtVS4JZXrZLp5yWs7aoYHu0Kns18xGaKcgQtDjCfA/s400/DSCN2115.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
and laid on DD2's bed<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg39S-7YKbG-qcoHwraZn54-hw-ZurC78VIER89Sl8HMpaoJu7BZuAAXnTRuLv6ysr5WU_UR1glqEWwY-KA1_PVYFZse-brYo_VusPbC5-BNxcsY33uCtgyk_ObkkyZOZZHfDyu1q_OAA/s1600/DSCN2116.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg39S-7YKbG-qcoHwraZn54-hw-ZurC78VIER89Sl8HMpaoJu7BZuAAXnTRuLv6ysr5WU_UR1glqEWwY-KA1_PVYFZse-brYo_VusPbC5-BNxcsY33uCtgyk_ObkkyZOZZHfDyu1q_OAA/s400/DSCN2116.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
All rolled up- that is obligatory isn't it?<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYNFAUgcvpKP9vXaJGTW8olWpn0ZRAEeN_MeOdOG3u67PntB4SYhzhhxf6yWntyCIxGOIaQYVwEJawnabZmK3R1Ryf2Z4grtNuZHsMX3BxGTtEvflpywT1iEOHCZo4RuZBEAs_0V3YDg/s1600/DSCN2117.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYNFAUgcvpKP9vXaJGTW8olWpn0ZRAEeN_MeOdOG3u67PntB4SYhzhhxf6yWntyCIxGOIaQYVwEJawnabZmK3R1Ryf2Z4grtNuZHsMX3BxGTtEvflpywT1iEOHCZo4RuZBEAs_0V3YDg/s640/DSCN2117.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
And, in the scene of crime!<br />
<br />
I shall see if my DD2 can recall when we got it going, but I reckon it is at least 5 years ago.<br />
<br />
And then...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ9LeMlFseauQ8V9T3rL9eUvQRx1zffi7TmAMld8-b7MAmXLbNMybNLtxxlOYzf58430StsFKEtzVkmt6QL3qhRpfyyaeHMiOURUyE25b6DI9Tap087emynyAcDhPmrB1vxzLTb-ujFw/s1600/DSCN2089.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ9LeMlFseauQ8V9T3rL9eUvQRx1zffi7TmAMld8-b7MAmXLbNMybNLtxxlOYzf58430StsFKEtzVkmt6QL3qhRpfyyaeHMiOURUyE25b6DI9Tap087emynyAcDhPmrB1vxzLTb-ujFw/s640/DSCN2089.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This piece of work resurfaced when I was doing a clear out of the sewing room. This is almost a piece of history. It will have been worked in the days before I had children. That places it over 30 years ago. I worked it, and put it away so that I could do something with it - eventually. I am pleased to say, eventually has appeared! I had just finished the quilt, and this sat waiting my pleasure. Now, when I was doing my clearance, I also found a number of oddments of velvet. I thought one of them might just come in for this treasure.. I auditioned a couple of colours, and settled for this one..<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBVZAoIOqiyObRcZNT8bCZMmA6aXmqk_6X8v5YasC8aG8_AtkyZjd0phl-q5Nrwu05oSb48-fqjIPe0EeXzGCUssZD7-rmUl162-cEPLGdJOPdklU2_hrOKe80RwduK6i4EMQcU6f9lg/s1600/DSCN2118.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBVZAoIOqiyObRcZNT8bCZMmA6aXmqk_6X8v5YasC8aG8_AtkyZjd0phl-q5Nrwu05oSb48-fqjIPe0EeXzGCUssZD7-rmUl162-cEPLGdJOPdklU2_hrOKe80RwduK6i4EMQcU6f9lg/s640/DSCN2118.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I have mitred corners, while ensuring the nap runs correctly, and inserted a zip at the bottom, other than that, keep it simple.<br />
I suspect I shall rehome it with a friend because of the colourway, but it may just quietly sit in the hall here, and grow good.<br />
<br />
Two finishes in one day, and just before the next costume marathon begins! Roll on costumes!<br />

However I have just returned from just such a celebration.<br />
<br />
So, what does a 100 year old get for a present?<br />
Well, all the usual options are there- flowers, plants,. sweets, biscuits, and so on. but she has a house full of stuff, eats far less than once she did, and, let's face it, the world and his wife will give flowers and sweets...<br />
A little thought is needed.<br />
<br />
so this is what has been achieved, for an Irish Aunt, who is a fit and healthy 100 years old!<br />

Celtic lettering for the initials, to ensure it is very personal and then the Celtic style interweaving for a border, in colours I thought she liked. Do not look too hard, there are some errors there, but by the time I realised, I was not unpicking all the way back to that first corner!</div>

Back in the summer I was bemoaning the fact that jam labels were stupid. they are too big- except when they are too small.. they have detail on which I do not require, or they are distressingly boring... Well. Someone was listening. He took photos in our garden, and in a few other places too, and produced custom labels. I now have two sheets of labels, and some more label sheets to print as desired. A lovely thoughtful gift, thank you babe! My lovely DS!<br />

At some point someone was commenting that a lunch bag would be desirable. Big enough to contain various bits and bobs, secure, washable.<br />

Tweetie birds, and a difficult handle- Probably more difficult because some idiot decided to use wipe clean fabric to do the outer.<br />
<br />
For those who wish to know, the lining is in PUL, ( from plush addict), and the outer is from a huge range at our local Dunelm Mill. It also has a thermolam lining between the PUL and the wipe clean fabrics.<br />
<br />
<br />
I hope it does it's job.<br />

DD2 and I somehow have fallen into making the traditional eats together.<br />
So, she came home one weekend back in October, and we made the Christmas cake, and the pudding together. More about the pudding later...<br />
Then she arrived late on the Thursday before Christmas so we could case it in almond paste, and then it was iced, with roll out icing, on Christmas Eve.<br />
<br />
Icing was coloured with love by my lovely nearly<a href="https://ohsewcultured.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank"> DD3, </a>, who kneaded it and added more colour, and kneaded again... we wanted a blue, which looked blue, without being 'dirty', but was not too oppressive. and then we added some green to that blue for the trees, and added some white to the blue and left it marbled for the stars.<br />
I think we did OK?<br />

Earlier in December, DD2 was home again, so that we could have a weekend, and whilst here, she organised a workshop, to make a Christmas wreath. </div>

We were part of a group of about ten, including the lass who was running it, and there were refreshments, tea, coffee, mulled wine, mince pies- you get the picture, and then we got to make table decorations as well. She plans to do garlands next year.... maybe we shall do that too? </div>

As for the pudding? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
While DD2 and I were at church, the pudding fairy got to work, and put the pudding on to steam, and heat through. We arrived home to a smell of burning. Burning string, burning paper. Cracked pudding bowl, very black pudding!. So this year, there was no flame it with brandy and process it into the dining room- there was a spoon it out from the middle, and hope it was not too smoky!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But we all got a helping, who wanted it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And now, I think I should say, Happy New Year, and may this coming year bring health, and happiness to everyone. </div>

</tbody></table>
<br />
A year or two ago friends came for a sewing weekend. One of our number brought everything in a bag, which had a simple but unusual design. We rather admired the bag, and has a good look at it, and sort of stored up the idea for later...<br />
<br />
<br />
Now is 'later'!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I happened to spot some rather attractive fabric, 100% linen, going for a rather bargain price up at Abakhan. Lovely linen with ELEPHANTS all over!<br />
<br />
Well, perhaps a good bit of that landed in my basket? and just perhaps, it was meant to be a bag... Some details are rather different, but, in essence, it is the 'Leonie bag'.<br />
<br />
