Wedding fun!

I cannot show all the people in this, as I do not have permission, but I had a ball making these dresses

This is the beautiful grey lace laid out on my bedroom floor being cut. As the fabric is one directional- though would anyone have noticed if I had cut panels upside down? Possibly not, but I would have known- I had to cut each piece on it's own.
Why my bedroom? Because it has a large floor area, and is carpeted. If I am crawling all over the floor to cut, please have some sympathy for my knees!

The dress has an under layer of pale antiqued pink satin. again has to be cut all in one direction- how come I did not know that before?  I have made stuff up in satin previously, and cursed it as it snags and pulls, but this heavy satin from Watson and Thornton in Shrewsbury was a dream. Is sewed nicely, hung beautifully and was just amazing. The gentleman there was really helpful too. Great stock, and knew what to tell us. I recommend it!

The pattern was a vintage Vogue 2903 and in common with a lot of Vogue patterns was slightly unusual in construction.

The dress is a princess seamed dress. All very straightforward there, yes, but, there is a yoke under the neckline, and the sleeve is hung from the yoke, and the side panels, without being stitched to the centre panels. So the centre panels are effectively sleeveless, and float free, - and hang beautifully I may say- so the original instruction tells me to construct the dress and form the sleeveless bit before putting on the yoke.
Having made a toile I decided it would be simpler to make the centre panels and do the shoulder straps before adding the side panels. And it was. Much easier, and gave me a better finish. The other bit I changed, was the facing construction. In the original pattern the front and back facings are each in two pieces, which are then stitched together at center front and back. I looked at it carefully, in case there was a non straight of grain seam there, but it looked to be straight, so, I cut these on the flod instead. This reduced the bulk at the centre necklines, which helped a lot.

In this image you can see how the shoulder 'strap' sits with the side panel sewn on.

I had cut the under layer and overlocked to the lace before I started construction. This gave me much more stable fabric to work with, and seemed to be a good move.

The instructions tell you to tack the pleats in place. I did this by hand- shows just how dedicated I was, hand sewing , even tacking, is not my thing!

As the lace has a very pretty border, we wanted to use that around the hem of the dress. So this border was carefully trimmed off, and stitched on at the end, onto sleeve hems and onto dress hem.

The sleeves have a slightly unequal underarm length, which is gathered to fit on the long side. The end result looks lovely, though I had not met this before.
As the dress is very heavy I added ribbon loops from the underarms to help hang it up. It also has very wide neckline, and without these the dress wuold have fallen off the hanger in no time.

This is just before doing the lace trim on the hem, when the lady tried it for a fitting.

We then made a 50's style net petticoat to go underneath.

She reported back from the wedding- so many compliments, she was thrilled with the result, and especially that the dress was unique!

So, the other dress?
Was the littlest bridesmaid's dress.

It started over coffee and cake.
The bride could not find the right dress for her youngest bridesmaid. She wanted her to be a 'mini-me'. I am familiar with this, as my daughter requested her youngest bridesmaid be a 'mini me'. In this instance though, the brides dress was quite sophisticated, off the shoulder, and not what you really want a 9 year old in.  However, covered buttons, yes we can do that, collar detail, yes,  and can we tie it in with the adult bridesmaids, who are in a pastel rainbow of colours...

I made a few suggestions, and it was decided the dress should be made.

They found an ivory crepe which matched the bride's dress perfectly, told me what was wanted, gave me measurements, and left me to it!
I found a bodice in one place, invented the skirt, sorted the collar, which was to mirror the brides dress detail, and I was given ribbon to use.
The ribbons on the waistband are the same colours as each of the bigger lasses, the collar mimics the bride's dress.

and there are little hooks on the back of the bow, with hand whipped eyes on the dress, so they are all but invisible, to support the bow, or it will drop funny.

The bow is invented, and sewn together, so it did not need to be tied, and the ribbon tails left to flow free. I have seen the photos and she looks beautiful!

The skirt is part circular, and sadly the crepe stretched unevenly, despite being left to hang for a bit, It ended up nearly straight... Ah well, you cannot win all the time!

Tip for a bow like this- The sash is 3" wide, but a 3" bow looked wrong. So I made the bow 5" wide. Much better! I graded the ribbon out to the edges to look right.

getting there... getting there.. whops! I blinked and missed it!

It has been a frantic month! sewing costumes and then getting present sewing done, all of a rush! Several gifts had to be changed, I just had no time to do what had been planned, but here are a few photos...
First, did your house receive a visitor?   Ours certainly did,
and I think he stopped for a nap, perhaps we were the final stop, but he was just caught going back to take his weary reindeer home, after all their efforts...

So, what did we find ?  All sorts of goodies came our way,

Including this lovely Christmas tree skirt, made secretly by my younger daughter, Frantically secreted in the room with the sewing machine and working away to get it done without me seeing anything! and then, sneaky child ( yes, she is fully an adult really) comes down in the wee smalls to put it round the tree- when everyone has already put presents round the tree- so she has to move them all, put skirt into place and reposition all presents...

I shall do a quick round up of some of the makes I made, and then, later, a post of all the makes received as well...

There are the main ones, yes, it was a well cushioned Christmas this year, there were some I failed to get photos of, but I think you can see why I was so busy? Of all these only the top one on the left was made before December started! The rest has had to be made in a tearing hurry to get all done in reasonable time, with the last couple of bits having to be made once Christmas was over...

I hope you all had as good a Christmas as we did, with no floods or disasters, and look forward to a 'makey' 2016.

a quilt finish

For her birthday, DD2 asked for a quilt. No other requirements, just, Mum, please make me a quilt.
Now the birthday is in early October, and the request came in early September, so, plenty of time to make that quilt, yes?

Well, other than that I also work full time, and have one or two other responsibilities, yes, that is bags of time...

I thought hard about this, but actually, I knew what I wanted to make, and I wanted nice cheery colours,  and to make something she would love despite all the inevitable flaws...
this is where I started. A simple but scrappy look, And it grew.

slowly I added to it.

and eventually I had thirteen like this...

which needed twelve to go between...

to make this.

Put on a spare bed

 and here is the back
and the obligatory rolled up shot..

Did I make the deadline?    well,  not quite.
The little one came home the week after her birthday, and I did manage to get it done for then.

And, I think she likes it.

Flying to a finish...

My last flying geese managed to come through for the 'take your time' swap with those Lazy Bums...

It is obligatory to get something wrong, isn't it?

so I obliged here, attempting to sew the background on wrong side to right side...

Luckily I spotted it pretty quickly, and was able to put measures in place to remedy the situation...Ok, ok, I got the stitch ripper out and sewed it on correctly!

Which gives me this block...

And then this one flew in to land,

the fourth block..
closely followed by the fourth one, here...

I used freezer paper piecing, and was able to reuse the same papers as I had used for Lizzie's blocks and May's blocks...

I did make one fresh one, as it had lost a lot of it's sticky properties... But I would choose freezer paper again, as it is reusable., And I like the crisp result with FPP, it is the waste that upsets my natural frugality... Ok, natural meanness!  No dressing it up for you!

So, all these are to wing their way across the pond, to a new home in USA.. soon...

Editing to join with Scraptastic Tuesday- handicapped by lack of easy access to putting photos onto the computer just now...

Hazel,the many faceted hedgehog...

The Fat Stash Brit Bee for June had a request for a hedgehog...A selection of fabrics was sent, to which we add some of our own.. and see what we can come up with.

Hazel number 1

This is a pattern by Oh Fransson, and is a bit fiddly, but comes together fairly well. I had an issue with my machine, which seemed to think it should centre the needle two steps to the left, yesterday, and then one step to the right today. As you may imagine, this leads to a mild inconsistency with sizing... But I think it is OK!

Hazel number 2

Funky was what we were asked for, I think funky is the word?

To wonk again...

A second wonky house is born, I am not sure it has wonked as much as it should... did you know the verb 'to wonk'? It is definitely in my version of English now....
some of those lines look rather more straight and regular to me, but I did try to wonk them, honest!

And here are the two together, very different to each other, and I trust their recipient will enjoy the wonk I have managed.

I also was lucky enough to get up earlier this week to a double rainbow. It was especially beautiful, with the brighter one displaying an extra band of colours on the inside curve. Sadly this does not come out on my inept photos, but still a rainbow is a magical thing in our all too mundane world.

Blocking..

The Fat Stash Brit Bee got a little shake up this month. November's queen bee had a few unexpected items crop up in her calendar, and so, has elected to do her month at the end of the bee. So, December's queen has very wisely sent out her request a little early.
Stacked rainbows. with a lovely sketch background.. Only stipulation was that the rainbow start with red, and end with purple, please...

I do not know if I am on my own here, but I love orange and yellow, and find it really difficult to find good ones! But we did it!

And then I managed another Christmas block, for a previous queen, and will do a couple more extras..Considering how much I do not like FPP, I seem to be doing more of it than I would expect...
Anyway, that is this weeks offerings.. for what it is worth.

May comes early

I am the queen bee for the month of May, in the Fat Stash Brit Bee. So, I had to try to be organised. Now, anyone who knows me, knows that I am not really an organised sort of person. I try, but any little piece of 'organised' is only the precursor to the next wee bit of chaos. But I have done really well this time, I hope...

I have  chosen my block- months ago- and been hunting up fabrics, as I have to send some fabric out, so my bee mates have something to start them off. They will make one block, 12.5" square, or equivalent, and return that to me.

I have chosen, this:

It is a floating stars block, which, in my head, is bright colours on black backgrounds. But I wanted black which was not dead black, I want the blocks to sing! I also am asking for the central star to be in one colour. They may choose which one colour, be it blue, green, yellow, whatever, but that centre should be one, and then the rest, bright cheerful singing anythings.

Do you know just how difficult it is to find tone on tone black?  It is a good thing I started hunting early. I eventually obtained 5 different prints, and the central black square is a plain black. Each black square is 4.5", and then the corners are made from 2.5" squares which use up all those grotty little scrappy bits which are too big to throw away, but too small to be really useful. You know the ones.

So, I have packed up sets like this, with two different prints, and a square of plain, and added something else in a couple of cheerful colours, but big enough to be useful somewhere, which may be included, but really do not have to be, but it gives the black background pieces. And something left for the bees to keep.

So, I had an array like this,

which soon turned into this,

which then became this!

You see how chaos intrudes?

And all these got posted this morning... ready for May.
