tile practice

The latest pattern for fmq- this is the front, I started at the top, and got larger and larger as I got down to the bottom of the area. Whether that is an improvement is debatable of course...
and this is the back, complete with 'nests of bobbin thread.

As you can see, I cannot sew in a straight line, I cannot sew on top of a line I have sewn already, and I cannot do square corners. Not much to work on there then.

But I do find it slightly easier if I go relatively fast. Why? I don't know. Maybe it is like pirouettes, you just have to go for it.

new attempt at the wave pattern, and drops still dying on me

but when they are all together I feel as if I may be winning a little

I have ALL the same problems with my tiles!! Straight lines are not my thing!! I need way more practice. I also tend to go fast, but I do better when I can force myself to slow down. I also tried lots of different ways of moving the fabric - I find it really hard to go side to side, much better going backwards and forwards although I can't always see what I'm doing!! I think it's easy to be critical of yourself but when it's on a quilt you wouldn't notice mistakes that much! (I hope!!). How big are your squares? It may help to go bigger

Straight lines aren't my favorite either. They always seem to go wobbly. I really worked on travel stitching this week. I found it really helped to go slower, but some do better going faster. Can't wait to see how we all do next week, more straight line...eek!

I find straight lines harder too. Keep going though!

How cool is it that you made a grid for the FMQ! What a great idea... I might have to copy that. ;) I think your waves are looking good and the tiles are extremely organic! I think they are so textured and interesting...how cool would it be to have that sketchy look all over a quilt. Very very cool!

Relax if you can - I think that is very important! It has helped me enormously! I am using my machine almost everyday and it has helped me a lot in control and consistency so keep it up and it will improve!

straight lines are definitely toughest, and it looks like we'll get to practice them this week. What helped me is where I put my hands - left one to the upper left and right one to the lower right. I'd put a bit more pressure on one or the other depending on the direction I was going and it seemed to give me more control.

The tiles are a really neat idea, and it looks to me like you're making progress.

I really like that you have a pre-made grid for each week. I find the first "edge" square to nearly be the most difficult piece. You are certianly making progress, so keep trying. We'll get some curves going for you soon :) Nicky's comment rings true for me too.
